eRoad Track - SnowPlow Tracking
Enterprise Information Solutions, Inc. (EnterInfo) provides a real-time automated vehicle location (AVL) and
snowplow tracking system (eRoadTrack)
for snowplow management operations.
eRoadTrack integrates GIS technology with GPS and wireless communications to create maps and reports that benefit the management,
resource assignment, and estimation of the plow and salting operations.
The system provides the snow operations management team
with vehicle location, travel histories, road treatment activities (i.e. plow and
salting), and progress statistics in real-time.
Location, plow/salting sensor status, and vehicle ID are wirelessly transmitted
to the tracking server from the vehicles with no intervention from the driver. Once the data is transmitted to the
database, eRoadTrack uses GIS technology to process the data and produce reports
and maps.
eRoadTrack is one of the first GIS integrated real-time
snowplow tracking systems in the nation.
It is a proven Internet/Intranet based application that provides advanced AVL functions
and capabilities specifically designed for snowplow operations.
Sample eRoadTrack clients include:
District of Columbia (2002) – 400 Vehicles

Howard County, Maryland (1999) – 100 Vehicles
eRoadTrack includes
an optional WEB module that displays the road treatment conditions on the Internet
for public access. The system was developed
using ESRI GIS technologies. Any available
ESRI map layers, including aerial imagery, can be displayed in the background. As a proven COTS application, a typical
eRoadTrack implementation is completed within days.
In addition to being a high productivity snowplow tracking system, eRoadTrack
is also ready to be used for other various tracking purposes such as street sweeping,
field service progress tracking, garbage collection, etc…

User-friendly AVL functions -
With a few mouse clicks, users can create a report
of travel history for a single vehicle or for the entire fleet in the system.

The actual trace of the vehicle during a user- defined
period can be displayed. The system
is also capable of identifying the exact location of a vehicle at a particular time
if you choose to keep the historical data.
eRoadTrack supports a mixture of data types including
cell-phone and fixed mounted wireless modems.
Depending on the type of the vehicle and the purpose of the tracking, the
client can choose from a group of the supported wireless devices and configure any
desired data sending frequencies.
Productive Snowplow
Tracking Functions
eRoadTrack provides snowplow tracking functions developed
for and designed by the snowplow management professionals. Through the use of a browser, all of the
users can access different authorized interfaces to manage and accomplish the work
more productively. Some of the eRoadTrack
snowplow tracking functions are:
Search and Query -
Users can search and query by vehicle, plow route,
plow zone, and street name to
track the plow progress. Each road segment is color-coded according
to the real-time road-treatment status.
The percentages of completion for route, zone, and city, are updated dynamically.
Track Vehicle and Road Segment Treatment History -
The system displays vehicle ID, treatment type,
and the time of the last treatment on each road segment. Users can query vehicles traveling on a
specific road or area during a specified time period to view the vehicle traces. As treatments on roads are performed,
eRoadTrack changes the color of each road segment to reflect the current treatment
status.
Performance Tracking and Resource Balancing –
Individual vehicle
performance
in terms of percentage of plow completion and mileage treated as well as the percentage of completion
for each route and zone are available in real-time.
The operation manager can estimate the required plow operation time, detect
any progress delays,
and dispatch resources for efficient job completion.
Safety Enhancement – Reports are provided
for management to detect vehicles in service or vehicles that have ceased to report. The system
reports the last known location of vehicles to supplement the vehicle tracking.
Playback and Simulation -
The
archived data can be used to simulate a storm or monitor the progress of the road
treatments
during specific time periods.

Role Based Application Access -
Multiple user classifications can be defined. A standard
configuration allows only the Administrator to edit the User Account; only the Field
Commander to globally reset the street treatment conditions; and only the Dispatchers
to change the vehicle assignment to a zone.
Snow Event Definition -
The system allows the assignment of a snow event category
for each street segment.
After the type is specified, the street treatment progress percentage will be
calculated based on the category assignment.
